For the last few years, my family has been incorporating more and more whole grains into our diet and I feel that it has made a difference in our lives. I’ve spoken before about thehealth benefitsof whole grains. A few of the reasons that are personally important to us are that whole grains can help with weight loss (they make you feel fuller longer) and reducing body fat. They can also reduce the risk of asthma and type 2 diabetes (both of which has affected my husband) and whole grains can lower the risk of heart disease. But even with all of these health benefits, we have grown to love them taste of them too.

Now, if you are like how our family used to be, and you don’t eat whole grains very often, I totally understand that whole grains can seem like a hassle. Or maybe you know that your kids will complain about them. I know, I’ve been there.

For our family, making small changes was the key. For example, use whole grain pasta in your homemade macaroni and cheese, coat chicken tenders in whole grain breadcrumbs, and serve whole grain crackers with hummus or other dips for a snack. Over time, I shifted to whole grains for most of our meals and now I don’t hear the kids fussing about them. For more tips, read this article on easy ways to enjoy whole grains.

The Whole Grain Council sent me a huge box of whole grain products to try out. The two I dug into right after taking these photos was theSkeeter SnacksandUpfront Foods, which are one of my favorites. But everything in the box is being enjoyed – – my oldest son loving the Late Julychips, others devouring the Real McCoy’sRice Puffs and cereal from Attune FoodsandBarbara’s Bakery. My husband in love with thePamela’sWhenever Bars.

Of course, getting so many great products had me wanting to cook and bake with them too. One of the first things we made was these Whole Wheat Granola Cookies with Bob’s Red Mill Granola.

Now, sure, they are a cookie, so I won’t pretend that they are health food, but the use of white whole wheat flour and whole grain granola does give them a nudge to the healthier side of things. Here’s the complete recipe:

FAQs

What happens if you use whole wheat flour in cookies? ›

Whole wheat flour, due to its coarser grind, takes longer to absorb any liquid in a recipe. Which means, when your dough is stiff to begin with – as this peanut butter cookie dough is – if you don't bake the cookies right away, the whole wheat will absorb their liquid, making them spread less.

Can I use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour for sugar cookies? ›

Sure. In fact, you can substitute almost any flour in a sugar cookie recipe. It will affect the texture a little but it's a very simple dough. I've used the same basic sugar cookie recipe with whole wheat, oat, and almond flour and gotten good results.

What makes cookies crunchy instead of soft? ›

While brown sugar keeps your cookies moist and soft, white sugar and corn syrup will help your cookies spread and crisp in the oven. Using more white sugar in your cookies will result in a crispier end product.

Are whole grain cookies healthier? ›

Additionally, chocolate cookies and chocolate chip cookies that are made with whole wheat flour or oats are more nutritious. When you're craving something sweet, you can also opt for an oatmeal raisin cookie, which contains whole grain oats that will help you stay full for longer.

Why whole wheat flour is not used for baking? ›

Whole-wheat flour makes your baked goods denser and a lot heavier than those made with just all-purpose flour. You can start by substituting some whole-wheat flour for all-purpose flour, but no more than 25 percent of the total amount unless you're willing to really sacrifice the texture of your baked goods.

Does whole wheat flour make cookies taste different? ›

It still won't be like a classic cookie in texture, and the taste will be unusual too. I made chocolate chunk cookies with whole wheat flour, sifted whole wheat flour and all purpose flour. The cookie with whole wheat flour was denser and barely spread out while baking. It also had a very different "whole wheat" taste.

Does whole wheat flour make cookies dry? ›

Whole wheat flour adds more nutrition, not to mention nutty and tasty flavor, to baked goods and other flour-based recipes. However, this flour can sometimes make the finished product seem drier and produce a coarser texture than using a more refined all-purpose flour.

How much whole wheat flour equals 1 cup of all-purpose flour? ›

1. Substitute an equal part of whole wheat flour for white flour as long as it's the same type of flour. In other words, 1 cup of whole wheat bread flour can replace 1 cup of white bread flour, and 1/2 cup of whole wheat all-purpose flour is an acceptable substitute for 1/2 cup of white all-purpose flour.

Should I use baking soda or baking powder in cookies? ›

Baking soda is typically used for chewy cookies, while baking powder is generally used for light and airy cookies. Since baking powder is comprised of a number of ingredients (baking soda, cream of tartar, cornstarch, etc.), using it instead of pure baking soda will affect the taste of your cookies.

What is the healthiest cookie to eat? ›

Depends on your metric of “health,” I guess. Oatmeal raisin probably has the best fiber/whole grain, flourless chocolate is better if you're trying to be low carb, meringues are probably lowest calorie. I'd say oatmeal raisin is a very nutritious cookie.

What is the healthiest cookie brand? ›

While not entirely organic, Simple Mills makes some of the healthiest cookies we found. The ingredients here are very clean, in addition to being grain-free. The flour is a blend of nuts, the fat is coconut oil, and the sweetener is coconut sugar.

Which is healthier whole grain or multigrain? ›

As the name suggests, a multigrain is made with multiple types of grains—but none of the grains included have to be whole grains. All of the grains in multigrain bread could have been stripped of the bran or the germ that gives whole grains their nutrients. And this is why whole grains are healthier than multigrains.

How to replace all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for cookies? ›

Whole-Wheat Flour

For that reason, when substituting it for all-purpose, use 50 percent whole-wheat, and 50 percent of another flour, preferably all-purpose, pastry flour or spelt, to avoid a dense result. If you want to use only whole wheat, you'll need to add more water.

What happens if I dont put enough flour in my cookies? ›

As a bonus, I did a little research to find out just what role each ingredient plays in chocolate chip cookies, so you can adjust your recipe however you feel like experimenting. Flour adds fluff and texture to the cookies. Adding too little flour can cause cookies to be flat, greasy, and crispy.
